Emily's magazine analysis

Phoebe's analysis

They have used big bold font for the mast-head to make it stand out against the rest of the writing on the front cover, they have also made it like this so you know that is it the title of the magazine. It makes a symbol that people will recognise in the stores in future reference. The colour of the text stays the same with blue and white though out the magzine apart from the words ‘starring’ and ‘the inside scoop on’ is in red. The colouring of the background is dull grey colourings which link in with the costume that Johnny Depp is wearing as they are dull grey clourings with his white face links in with the center of the magazin beginning to fade to white. This relates to the target audience as it is using all the factors that lure peoples attention in and want to read the magazine and find out whats happened.
Although this magazine title is in blue writing when you visit the entertainment weekly website you will see it is a black and white heading. They have gone against the house style they would normally use as this will draw the customer’s attention in and make them want to read it.
The main image on the page is Jonny Depp staring in Sweeney Todd, this is to publicise the new release of his new film, and make people want to buy it to find out more about the film and what he said in his interview. As the image covers the page and is the only image on the page means that the film and character is the most important thing in the magazine. The character simplyses the power he has as he is looking directly at the audience with a blank look on his face but his eyebrows frond.
The image is the only image on the front page this is so that it stands out to people and that the magazine want to emphasis the point that his new film is out soon.
The issues number and date are in the top right hand corner of the page in very small writing tucked away as this isn’t very important information but it is still big enough for people to read and not have to squint at it.
The main reason for the magazine front cover it to promote Johnny Depp’s new film Sweeney Todd, it is also tells the audience that in the magazine there is also articles about different celebrities but the main celebrities and main article in the magazine is Johnny Depp.

Weekly Magazine Analysis

My Analysis

Monthly Magazine Analysis

My Analysis

Summary

After analysing the three magazine covers I have noticed the different conventions of the different types of magazines and their similarities and differences. The women's weekly magazine has more of a variety of colours, font and shapes and a less clear house style compared with the two monthly magazines that have a more consistent theme in their layout. They weekly and monthly magazines are aiming at very different audiences. The audience of the weekly magazine are looking for a gossipy and a more 'trashy' type of news which is reflected in the busy and bright layout of the cover. The other two covers have a much more simplistic house style that helps the magazine to appear more professional, legitimate and 'cool' which is what their audience would be attracted to. The audience of the film and music magazines would expect correct and accurate information about the topics with a professional journalistic approach, where as the readers of the women's weekly magazine would be more accepting of conspiracy and gossipy stories they may be exaggerated or based on unsupportive evidence. This is also used emphasised by the language used in the cover lines and other text on the covers. The weekly magazine used more extreme and dramatic, over the top language, whereas the others kept a more professional feel. Therefore we will try to attain the professional air that portrays a more accurate and apt style of journalism that will appeal more to our audience.
