Todorov's theory

Today we considered Todorov's theory and how we could apply that to our own horror. We explored ideas of having a female antagonist with a stalker style male protagonist in pursuit. There are five main stages of Todorov's theory, they are:
  1. Equilibrium – A happy start
  2. A disruption of this equilibrium by an event – A problem occurs
  3. A realisation that a disruption has happened
  4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption – the problem is solved
  5. A restoration of the equilibrium – A happy ending
The theory applied to our ideas. For example the equilibrium would be the girls normal everyday life , followed by the disruption, the hints that something isn't right and that someone is watching, then the girl would start to understand the seriousness of the situation and realise that something is going on. Next there would be some attempt to escape from the antagonised, the final section may not fit with the theory due to it being a horror (a genre that often plays with conventions). Therefore the film would follow Todorov's theory mostly but the ending would be different.

Todorov's theory also applies to our final idea. Although the opening does not fit well with the theory the idea for the whole feature does. The equilibrium is the two sisters living a normal life, followed by the disruption, them going to the abandoned building and coming across the supernatural element. Then the realisation that this is happening. Next the attempt to repair the damage is them running away and trying to leave, and then the restoration of equilibrium is not complete but the realisation of their mistake is a certain amount of restoration.
